July 31-Main Street 5K Road Race, second Saturday of the Virginia Highlands Festival. Test your speed and stamina! Start/ finish at the  Farmers Market Pavilion on Remsburg Drive, 6:30pm registration, 8pm start. $15/preregistered, $25/day of race. Commemorative T-shirt guaranteed with early registration. Awards three deep in all age brackets for men and women.  Call 698-5667 or 676-2282 for information. Proceeds benefit Advance Abingdon, Abingdon’s Main Street organization.

September 11-Red, White and Bluegrass Patriots Day Celebration, Veterans Memorial Park, Cummings Street. A  one-day family-friendly festival honoring our local service people along with a world-class bluegrass music stage. Amusements, food and beverages, and friendly competitions will be ongoing throughout the afternoon and evening. 3-7PM. Admission: $5/general admission, $2/ 12&under, active military and the “Greatest” generation.

September 22, 23-Virginia Main Street Essentials Training, Virginia Ballroom. Meet folks from across the Commonwealth interested in making downtown the heart of their communities. Help show off Abingdon! Call 698-5667 to register.

Saturdays in October, Main Street’s Savor the Flavor celebrates Virginia Wine Month. Local restaurants will feature special tastings of regional wines paired with locally grown foods.

November/December, Main Street Wreath Contest, Registration forms available at the Advance Abingdon Office in November through Thanksgiving. Judging held first week in December.
